In a recent post of “Ajax Turkey’s for 2007″ Dietrich Kappe of Agile Ajax decided to group ThinWire together with other Ajax technologies he considers to be lame for 2007. Included on the list are Gmail 2.0, ECMAScript 4 (aka JavaScript 2.0), Vista, IE7 and of course… the all powerful ThinWire framework. Here’s what he has to say about ThinWire: “any framework that makes you specify position and calculate height and width of every widget is a productivity killer.” I don’t usually find myself at a loss for words, but all I can say here is “Bravo!” You, single handedly proved why its generally a good idea to RTM before opening YBM. Who is Dietrich Kappe anyhow? In any case, both Ted and I have made our best attempt to provide correction to his statements in the comments. Hopefully this will provide him with the information necessary to develop an informed opinion in the future.

Well, after 9 months of waiting, v1.2 RC2 is here! It’s been a long trek with many challenges. But along the way we’ve done what we can to advance the framework and the community. There is now a fairly solid book available on the framework, a brand new easier to navigate website, a much more solid and stable framework (dare I say the most stable of all the Ajax RIA’s) and along the way we threw in some performance enhancements to boot. Additionally, we’ve attended AJAXWorld East, the Ajax Experience West and JavaOne this year! And before the year is through we’re going to be at AJAXWorld West and the Ajax Experience East. Further, we’ve been working on some exciting new things for ThinWire that we’ll be sharing with everyone shortly. So overall, it may have seen like a long time, but we’ve come a long way and we thank those of you who are ThinWire supports for sticking by us. The future looks very bright indeed!

Ok, so back to business. Our goal is to have v1.2 final out by our appearance at next weeks AjaxWorld 2007 West show. Yes, that’s a short schedule, but we think v1.2 RC2 is more or less stable enough to be promoted to final. Therefore, please take the time to download RC2 ASAP and test it within your applications. If you find any bugs or issues that are new, then please report them right away so we can get them fixed prior to final. Now, with that said, we have recently branched the ‘trunk’ into branches/1.2 within the SVN repository so that we can start working on large scale changes to the codebase for 1.3. Therefore, if you have been following the trunk for stability reasons, please do an SVN Switch to point to branches/1.2. The trunk will be highly unstable for the next few months while we practice some extreme browser magic

Well, it’s here. The secret is revealed. I’m not talking about the over sensationalized “Secret”, no, this is one that will actually make a difference in your life so long as you’re a wanna be ThinWire developer or even if you’ve been kicking the wheels on the framework for a while now. For the past couple months, both Ted and myself have been working on the first ever ThinWire book! And as of a week or so ago, you can now download your very own electronic copy from here. Now, granted, it’s not free ($12.95), but thanks to the formal publication process we’ve ended up with something really cool that should be helpful to everyone…. and at least there is such a thing now :D Also, if you have a Safari Online subscription, you can add this book to your book shelf for only .5 of a slot by visiting this page. Here’s some quick details about the book:

Total Length: 183 pages

Chatpers:

Introduction to ThinWire – Covers what ThinWire is, book contents, the framework design philosophy & goals, as well as how to get started with development.

Component Overview – Discusses each Component, its unique features and how to use them.

User Interactions with Events – Learn how to effectively use each type of event.

Layout Management – From concepts and usage through rolling your own layout.

Styling an Application – Global styling, subclass styling, HTML text styling, visual effect engine.

Application & Utilities – Coverage of the Application object, XML Object Definition (XOD), ArrayGrid and ImageInfo

The only negative thing about this book is that it doesn’t have move to it! We could easily do another 6 chapters covering a range of additional topics and with any luck we’ll get the opportunity sometime if the future. If the demand for this eBook is strong enough, they’ll ask us to do a full printed book at which time we’ll have to expand on more topics, so tell your friends about ThinWire and the new book!

If you haven’t noticed yet, nominations for the 20007 SourceForge.net Community Choice Awards have begun. All you need to do in order to vote for ThinWire is log-in with your SourceForge account and visit the ThinWire Framework project page. From there just click on the “Nominate This Project” image and select a category to nominate the project in. If you revisit the nomination page multiple times, you can nominate us for additional categories. We think the framework qualifies for the “Best Project for the Enterprise”, “Best Project”, “Best Tool or Utility for Developers” & “Best Technical Design”, but feel free to nominate us as you see fit.

Please show us your support by nominating us in at least one category! Thank You! Here is a quick link to the nomination page:

On another topic, we put out a new snapshot build on Friday. Version 1.2_RC1_r359 includes a number of bug fixes and minor improvements that have been checked into the trunk over the last couple months. If you have been using SVN to continuously update from the trunk as we check in new changes, this snapshot might not be helpful to you, but for the rest of you we hope this will fix a number of issues that exist in the last snapshot. A changelog of what’s happen since the last snapshot is available here.

Well, I know this is long over due, but it’s here finally. Anyone who has frequented the forums has seen that different people, especially those new to the framework, ask a number of the same questions. Well, Gerhard Ottel, an active member of the community took notice of this and wrestled together an unofficial FAQ that he hosted on his own site. After talking with Gerhard, it seemed like it might be a good idea to just host the FAQ right on the ThinWire site. So that’s what we did. If you visit the community page, you’ll notice a new section for the FAQ that provides a link to the full FAQ. I know it’s missing a few things, but we’ll improve upon it as time goes on. If there is something missing that you’d like to have added, either send an email to community@thinwire.com or post a comment to this post and we’ll see if can get the questions and answer added to the list.
